Showing Support For Our Community: The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (LLS)

We love to support great organizations in our community and The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (LLS) is one of them. There are an estimated 399,967 people living with or in remission from leukemia in the US. Many people aren’t exactly sure what leukemia is. Leukemia is cancer of blood-forming tissues, including bone marrow.

People with slow-growing types of leukemias often don’t have any symptoms of the disease. Rapidly growing types of leukemia can cause symptoms like fatigue, frequent infections, weight loss and you may bruise more easily than other people. Treatments for the disease vary.

Just like many non-profits, The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society began because a family lost a loved one to the disease.

Robert “Robbie” Roesler de Villiers from New York was only 16 when he quickly died of leukemia in 1944. Frustrated by the lack of treatments for what was then considered a “hopeless disease,” Robbie’s parents Rudolph and Antoinette de Villiers started a fundraising and educational organization in their son’s name. The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society is dedicated to curing leukemia, lymphoma, myeloma, and other blood cancers.

They also sponsor free community-based education programs for to help educate patients, families and the medical community on the various blood diseases. Local doctors and other healthcare professionals often lead these programs
